General Sessions

GS1 – OPENING GENERAL SESSION – EC
Rear Admiral Aisha Mix, MSN, MPH, RN
Join us for this kick-off session as we hear from Rear Admiral Aisha K. Mix, Chief Nurse Officer. With more than 20 years in nursing as a clinician, public health practitioner, educator, and emergency manager, Mix serves as the Senior Health Policy Administrator for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, Immigration and Customs Enforcement Health Service Corps (IHSC) where she manages a team focused on the enhancement of health care delivery within IHSC facilities.

GS2 – BLACK MOTHERHOOD AND THE INVISIBLE BURDEN OF RACE, RACISM, AND IMPLICIT BIAS – EC
Jai-Me Potter Rutledge, BS, MHA, PhD(c)
This presentation will take audience members on a jour ney of Black motherhood and the role that race, racism, and implicit bias have on that journey. Through vignettes, improv, and interactive exercises, participants will actively engage with the material. The presentation is meant to be thought-provoking by allowing time for self-reflection and questions. In addition to the personal journey, participants will discuss relevant scientific research and how this increased knowledge will or has impacted their professional practice.

GS3 – HEALTH CARE ADVOCACY: GIVING A VOICE TO YOUR HEART – EC

Many nurses want to make health care improvements that need efforts beyond their consistently excellent bedside care. This session will first highlight why advocacy is so important for improving the health care system and why nurses already have the credibility and skills to effectively advocate and successfully impact purposeful change in their local communities, regions, and even state. Then, we share real-world engagement strategies that nurses can take to their home institutions for immediate implementation.

GS4 – LIFE IN BALANCE: IMPROVING THE QUALITY OF YOUR JOURNEY – EC

This informative, entertaining, and inspiring session will address the universal quest of contemporary life—finding a balance.
